Gary Player Design

Since the early 80's, Gary Player Design has specialized in the provision of golf course design services as it relates to master planning, detailed design, preparation of construction specifications as well as turnkey projects on a design and construction basis. We have designed some forty premier golf courses throughout the United States and over two hundred worldwide.

The mission of Gary Player Design is to conduct our business in the same manner in which Gary Player has conducted himself as a golfer and gentleman during his 50-year career. Our services revolve around building long-term mutually rewarding relationships with our clients by displaying integrity and credibility in a business setting. From project conceptualization through planning, design, construction, marketing and opening, we take a proactive role in providing experienced solutions throughout the intricate development process. When a design agreement is signed, we join our client's team and do whatever is necessary to contribute to that team's success.

As a company, we are careful to accept a reasonable number of select jobs at any given time. We recognize the time it takes to give the service that our brand represents and deliberately follow the steps necessary to deliver the attention to detail that will enhance the quality of each project we accept.

Geoffrey Cornish & Brian Silva

Cornish and Silva, Inc. was formed in 1983 when Geoffrey S. Cornish brought on Brian M. Silva as a partner. Cornish had begun a practice in golf course design in 1952, having previously worked with Canadian Architect Stanley Thompson. Mark A. Mungeam became a principal in 1995.

With over 230 new courses to his credit, Geoffrey S. Cornish is the most prolific of New England golf course designers. Cornish is the recipient  of numerous awards and honors including:

  • Distinguished Service Award from the Golf Course Superintendent Association of America (1981)
  • Donald Ross Award from the American Society of Golf Course Architects (1982)
  • Don A. Rossi Humanitarian Award from the Golf Course Builders Association (1996)
  • Selection to the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame (1995)

Cornish is co-author with Ron Whitten of "The Golf Course" , the definitive history of golf course architecture, which was re-published as "The Architects of Golf" . He also published "Golf Course Design" a textbook for students of the design process, co-authored with Robert Muir Graves. "Classic Golf Hole Design" , also with Graves, was released in 2002, along with his independent project, "18 Stakes on a Sunday Afternoon" , an annotated bibliography of golf course architecture in North America . Cornish is one of only two course architects listed in Who's Who in America .

Brian M. Silva was introduced to golf course design and construction at an early age by his father John, a feature shaper in golf course construction. Silva received his training in Turf Management, Landscape Architecture and Plant and Soil Sciences at the University of Massachusetts , teaching for two years in the Stockbridge Turf Management Program. Before becoming a USGA Green Section Agronomist, he taught for three years at Lake City Community College in Florida . In 1981 Silva received the Distinguished Service Award from the Florida Turfgrass Association. His first design, The Captains Course on Cape Cod , has received much acclaim as the forerunner of the "high-end daily fee" facility. Silva is recognized as an authority on course restoration and renovation, having successfully completed projects throughout the country.

Mark A. Mungeam became interested in golf course design while a student working at a 9-hole course which was considering an addition. Upon graduating with a degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering, he began work in golf course construction, spending the next four years building courses at locations from Massachusetts to Florida . Mungeam joined Cornish & Silva in 1987, and was soon responsible for designing many new projects. A member of the ASGCA Environmental Committee responsible for the publication of "Environmental Approach to Golf Course Development" .

  • Shaker Hills in Harvard , Massachusetts which was named Runner-Up by GOLF DIGEST as The Best New Public Course to Open in 1992

  • Cyprian Keyes Golf Club , selected by GOLF DIGEST as the Fifth Best New Affordable Public Courses for 1998
